"When challenges are seen as opportunities there is massive potential for growth" After a conversation about student testing and data today it has got me thinking about student learning and the potential for growth each student has when we use data to inform goal setting and planning.
The challenge is in how you look at the data; it has to be more than just a string of faceless numbers on a page. I like looking at what we know about students and questioning what the data says, or doesn't say; looking at supporting or contradicting evidence, prompting discussions and robust conversations; to keep digging. When we identify strengths and successes in student learning; and dig deeper to see what the contributing factors were that supported that success, we are looking for 'triggers', the possible prompts to repeat or extend the opportunities for further growth. In the same way when we look at challenges or failures we need to to the same thing; what is the story, do we have all the pieces of the puzzle? What is it we can't see? What were the actions or strategies that were the most effective? What was the time frame? Who was the student working with? How can we use this information to work towards more grow? Can we use the same triggers to work with other students? All questions to ponder in our quest to provide opportunities for our students to grow and learn; for us to think about what we can do differently, how students can engage in their interests and ask questions while being supported. How do we engage with students about what the data shows? Is it more than just a report for a parent? Do we really talk openly about data in a way that makes people feel comfortable, hopeful that this information will support future planning. That it is more than just a measure on a given day. When we have mindset that is open to questioning and thinking; to challenge and looking at alternative ideas, then, you have opportunities. Opportunities for growth, learning, thinking and agency.
